What is Eco-Tourism?

Sustainable tourism, Eco-tourism and responsible tourism are ways to describe travelling to natural areas which conserve the environment.

An eco-hotel, eco lodge or a green hotel, is environmentally sustainable accommodation which minimise their impact on the natural environment

Here at Moalboal Eco Lodge, we are proud to share our values with you, and encourage you to teach us how we can continue to improve.

According to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), a good Eco Lodge should:
  • Provide comfortable rooms and common areas that reflect the designs and heritage of the local culture
  • Offer a natural setting that has been carefully preserved and contains local plant life
  • Use locally harvested and sustainable and/or recyclable building materials
  • Purchase food from local farmers
  • Use environmentally-friendly energy, water and waste systems
  • Offer opportunities for interaction with local owners, managers, staff and guides

At Moalboal Eco Lodge, in addition to the above we aim to:
  • Help you minimise your impact as you travel around Moalboal, Cebu and the Philippines
  • Build environmental awareness for our staff, visitors, and the local community
  • Provide financial benefits to locals and local businesses.
To Reduce Waste:
  • We refill one litre of drinkable water every day in the private rooms.
  • Free water refills are available for all guests (shared room and private rooms)
  • An aluminium water bottle is provided in the private rooms to refill and carry on day trips.
  • A reusable cloth tote bag is provided for all guests to use when shopping for fruit, groceries or souvenirs.
  • All fruit, vegetables and eggs are purchased locally from Moalboal Market.
  • We buy our consumables in bulk to reduce wasteful packaging.
  • We provide reusable aluminium straws for your drinks.
  • Upcycled glasses are used for drinks.
Waste Management
  • Our separate recycling bins make recycling easy and convenient.
  • We separate waste streams for recycling: cans, plastic bottles, general plastic and glass.
  • We process organic waste such as food scraps, paper and cardboard in our composter.
  • We recycle non-organic waste with local partners.
  • Our Ecobrick station is used to minimise the amount of plastic sent to landfill. We encourage all our guests to participate in this practice during their stay.
  • Breakfast is made without the use of palm oil and processed foods.

Energy and Water Conservation
  • We use low voltage bulbs.
  • Instead of air-conditioning systems, all rooms were designed with high ceilings and cross-ventilation which uses fresh air to cool the rooms naturally. Fans are also provided.
  • We have a rainwater collection system. There is no mains water in Moalboal, and turning on the tap and not getting water is a real occurrence. The water you use in the shower and to wash your hands is provided by nature during the rainy season.
  • There is a greywater system in place to reuse water. All shower, sink and washing machine water is piped into a separate system which is used to water our garden during dry season.
  • Your breakfast is locally sourced. All fruits and vegetables are purchased from the local market in Moalboal.

Palm Oil and Nasty Chemicals
  • Your breakfast does not contain palm oil or any palm oil derivative, this includes your bread and peanut butter which are made locally and not purchased from the supermarket (which contain palm oil).
  • Your hand soap does not contain palm oil.
  • Rooms are cleaned using natural products such as white vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice in reused/upcycled bottles. Cotton cloths are used instead of plastic sponges.
  • The washing up liquid used to clean your dishes contains only natural ingredients which are not harmful to the environment.
  • We have an Eco Shop selling palm oil free, plastic free, zero waste and vegan products. From bamboo tooth brushes, tooth powder, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner bars to granola, cashews chia and flax seeds.
