Travelling to Moalboal from Cebu City/Airport
Picture
There are two ways to reach Moalboal from Cebu. The easiest, most convenient and safest way to travel if you wish to observe social distancing following the recent Covid-19 pandemic, is for us to arrange a private car transfer. We will happily do this for your health and your peace of mind. The journey takes around 3 hours (depending on time of day and traffic). Please read our Covid-19 care page to see what we are doing to ensure your safety at all times.

If you are on a budget or wish to experience Cebu like a local, you can catch an air-con bus (cost is P156 one way and it’s more like a coach), or to really be a part of local life, take the non-air con "ordinary" bus.

Location
Moalboal is located on the south west coast of Cebu, in the Visayan region of the Philippines.

The Republic of the Philippines is in the northern hemisphere, 1,150km (715 miles) north of the equator. A tropical region, Cebu enjoys around 12 hours of daylight.

There is no daylight saving time.

Language – English is widely spoken to an excellent standard. In this region of the Philippines, the official language is Bisaya.

Religion - Catholic.

The Philippines
The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,400 islands stretching around 2,500km north to south. Bounded by the Philippine Sea to the east, the Celebes Sea to the south, and the South China Sea to the west and north. This area is in the heart of the Coral Triangle, one of the most bio-diverse places in the world.

The Philippine archipelago is divided into three regions; Luzon in the north, Visayas in the centre, and Mindanao in the south.

Cebu
Cebu Island is in the heart of the Visayan Region, an important cultural and economic area of the Philippines.

The capital of Cebu is Cebu City, the oldest City and first capital in the Philippines. The first Spanish settlers made their home here in Cebu.

Moalboal
Moalboal is on the south west coast of Cebu, and is most famous for the sardine run, waterfalls and its stunning natural beauty.

Climate
The Philippines has a tropical climate with “wet” and “dry” seasons which vary from north to south.

Cebu is one of the driest islands, and although “wet season” is June to October, the weather doesn’t adhere to this label, and it can rain any time. The hottest months are March, April and May  when it seldom rains. You can expect around five days of sunshine most weeks any time of year.

Typhoons do occur in the Philippines, however Moalboal is protected by high mountains to the east. The main “typhoon path” is between 400 – 800km north of Moalboal and Cebu. What you may experience in Moalboal is the tail-end of a typhoon or tropical storm resulting in heavy rain and strong winds.

Thankfully this type of weather isn’t usually enough to cause damage, but weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always best to check the weather before travel.

Healthcare
Picture
In Moalboal there are private doctors, a public health centre with doctors, well equipped pharmacies and local ambulances.

The nearest hospital is in Badian 20 minutes away, but the main hospital is in Cebu City 3-4 hours’ drive.

No special vaccinations are required when travelling to the Philippines

Malaria and Dengue Fever – There are mosquitos around especially when it rains, so it’s best to wear long trouser legs, and protect yourself with repellent. We sell 100% natural, no-DEET mosquito repellent if you need any (yes it does work!).
Flights and Visas
Picture
To enter the Philippines, you need to produce an onward flight ticket so purchase one in advance. You may be forced to buy a ticket when you check in, and may not be able to board the plane until you can show a flight out of the Philippines.

A 29 day FREE tourist visa is given for most countries upon arrival at your chosen airport. If you are loving the Philippines and would like to extend your stay (and why wouldn’t you!), we will happily provide you with the information you need. It is very easy to do, and you don’t have to leave the Country!

When leaving the Philippines, a departure tax of P850 is payable for all international departures at all airports.

Contact us if you need to know anything in advance.
Sim Card, Data/Internet and WiFi
Picture
It is very cheap and convenient to purchase a Philippine Sim card which you can do at the airport. There are two companies to choose from, Globe or Smart.

When you top up, it is called load. Look out for signs advertising “load” which can either be for calls or internet data.

Wi-Fi is available in most restaurants, scuba diving centres and bars. We have free WiFi at Moalboal Eco Lodge.

Currency and ATM's
Picture
The currency is Philippine Pesos and prices are written as either P50 or 50PHP.

Notes are 1,000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20.

Make sure you have lower denominations available for travel, food and souvenirs.

In Moalboal there are four ATM’s for foreign bank cards:
  • Inside the Three Sixty Pharmacy on Moalboal Highway Road (near the bus/trike stop)
  • In Cafe Chef at Panagsama Beach (opposite Venz)
  • In Evie’s Kiosk at Panagsama Beach – please note they do not always have cash
  • At the BBQ Grill restaurant just along Tubli Road (off Panagsama Road)

Each transaction is limited to P10,000, and a country-wide fee of P250 is applied per transaction. If you need to withdraw P20,000, this has to be done in two transactions, and the fee will be P500 in total, not including any fees your own bank may charge.
Plug sockets
Picture
Plug sockets in the Philippines are Type A. If you are visiting from the UK, Singapore, Europe etc, you will need an adaptor. If you forget to purchase one before your arrival, we have adaptors for sale.

The standard voltage is 220 V and the standard frequency is 60 Hz.

In addition to an adaptor, you may need a voltage converter. Check Power Plug and Sockets of the World for more information.
Driving and getting around
Picture
The Philippines is right hand drive.

Most people hire scooters which we can help you with, but there are many different options for getting around.

Bicycle – If you want to see Moalboal at a leisurely pace, enjoy looking at palm trees and high-fiving locals, then cycling is the best way to travel around. Roads are generally good, drivers are very considerate, and you will be saving the environment. We have bicycles for hire.

Taxi – You can take a private car to and from your destination, for example airport transfers. We can help you with this.

Tour - You are on holiday, so sit back, relax, and allow someone to drive you to all the cool spots, with a tour. There are many different types covering all the famous sights such as Kawasan, Osmena Peak, or they can be tailor made to suit you. We work with a few tour operators and can help you with suggestions or any requirements.
Picture

Trike - This is a motorbike with a sidecar, some are small and can only hold a few passengers, some are larger and you will see as many as 10-12 people riding one. Most tourists hire the entire trike for themselves and their luggage.

You will be expected to haggle, but an approximate cost from Moalboal Town to our Eco Lodge is P100 - P150.
Picture
Jeepney - Jeepneys are brightly coloured army style vehicles that have set routes, eg Moalboal – Badian. It's the cheapest way of getting around, and is the way locals travel . With fares as little as P10, always make sure you have coins/small notes available to pay the exact amount. Ask other passengers for the fare, or find out in advance.

To ride a jeepney, stand on the side of the road and flag one down as it approaches. Feel free to ask the driver if they stop where you are going, then he (and the other passengers) will know when you would like to get off, and will usually help. If you know your stop, tap a coin on the roof bar, or yell “Para po” (please stop), and the driver will pull over. Pass your money to the driver (sometimes via other passengers like a game of pass the parcel) and squeeze yourself out.
Picture
Bus – The yellow Ceres Line bus travels all over Cebu. There are two types: air-con is more like a coach with larger seats, no air-con is smaller with open windows and it feels more like a bus. Prices are cheap and vary depending on which type of bus you catch, and how far you are travelling. As a guide, the cost for one person travelling from Cebu City to Moalboal in an air-con bus is P156.

Habal-Habal – There are many people offering to take you from A to B on the back of their motorbike, but they do not provide helmets for the journey, unlike Cebu City.

You will be expected to haggle, and they may start at P100. Do not pay this because this sets a precedent for the future and leads to greed. It’s perfectly acceptable to pay a bit more than the going rate, but not when the price is more than double. Approximate cost from Moalboal to Panagsama is P40 – P60.
